ABOUT
The Opel Owners Club SA is the official Opel Club of South Africa
and was formed in 1987 by enthusiasts for enthusiasts.
The club was under the regime of Gerald Botha until he passed away and was taken
under the wing of Mark Jones who, along with his dedicated committee, sent the
club soaring.
The club had hardly any members and the committee had to think quickly on how to
get new members to join the family. From attending church functions and fetes,
to standing on the street corner, the club started growing, fast becoming known
as the biggest car club in the country.
In 1997 the ultimate challenge was started between Opel and VW which has been
ongoing for 7 years, and Opel has taken home the trophy for the last 4 years in
a row.
In 2003 Clive Murray became president has taken the club to new heights, with
over 400 active members and a committee amounting to 17 committed people.
In 2005 Debbie Bolus became president and had a difficult time to get members to stay active and had less committee members to help in all the tasks. Debbie and Nick the treasurer stepped down at the 2007 AGM.
In 2007 Andrew Ferenczy became president, Martin Ferguson as chairman and Andre Alberts as treasurer. From 2009 after 2 years of hard work the club membership numbers started growing, with headway being made regarding starting up interclub challenges, which is also helping to grow the club. The committee consists of 6 members, but we have a lot of members who help as a sub-committee at the larger events like the Gerotek high speed oval. We are always on the lookout for extra committee members, so please contact us if you are interested.
The OOC is also now a part of SCC (Sports Car Club of SA) which
helps a lot when we need to arrange some bigger events and track days.
The aim of the Opel Owners Club SA is to host events that are fun, safe,
informative and family oriented. There are events to test the skill of drivers
in their own vehicles as well as teach them in the various aspects of handling
their vehicles, right down to social events to build camaraderie between the
members.
The club membership fee is R220-00 per annum and this helps pay for the monthly
newsletter, membership stickers and membership card, as well as some of your
event entrances. In the last two years alone the amount paid back to club
members, either through the club sponsoring breakfast runs, event entrances,
races, or social gatherings.
